How I Ended Up Planning Weddings

March 31, 2017

I always loved weddings and events, but especially weddings as I felt the party never stopped. I never realized that my love of events could actually turn into a career. After attending University and College I took a job at a Not-For-Profit. It was exciting work as I was able to use my skills of event planning on a day to day basis. For four years I created and executed their 3 day conference. While I loved planning this event every year, I realized with NFP’s, especially this one it became repetitive. The client (my boss) and the guests (our members) were in the mentality of “if it a’int broke don’t fix it” so year in and year out I would create the same event and it would go off without a hitch.

During the fourth year’s conference I said to myself if I am going to continue in events, I want to become certified. That is how I ended up at York University.

At York they were offering a Event Management Certification in Weddings and Corporate Events. I jumped at the chance and enrolled in night school.

The first portion of school was Weddings. I always knew I loved them, but never thought about planning one. Fast forward a few weeks and I was hooked. I loved how weddings were different; how it was a beyond personal affair and how as a planner, I could assist the bride and groom in creating a memorable night that would begin their lives together.

Second part of the course was Corporate planning and funny enough, this is how I made my way into the world of Wedding Planning.

Our teacher for the Corporate Planning portion was amazing. She had been in the industry for 10 years and had been running her own company doing both corporate events as well as weddings. We instantly had a connection ( I think because I was a “mature” student, already in the workplace and didn’t believe that wedding planning would be just like the movie- that’s right…sorry JLo). I asked if she would mind if I volunteered with her at some of her weddings to see how I liked it and how it differed from corporate. She said yes, and guess what… I LOVED IT!

Fast forward to 2014. My family went through a great loss with a passing of a family member which in turn changed everything. I no longer was working at my full time job as I was busy dealing with the aftermath of the loss. I knew that I wanted to do something that not only would provide me with a great career, but something that I could be in control of 100% and this is how I ended up in wedding planning.

I called my mentor/teacher and said “I am going to start my own Wedding Planning Company! Any advice?” Her response…. I am ready to get out of the industry, I want to spend more time with my family and see if a different career is in the cards for me. I said, OK but how does that help me? Her reply…Don’t start a company when you can buy mine!

Since I had already been working with her on the side and our values and brands seemed to line up, I thought this is perfect.

April 15, 2015 I became the proud owner of Platinum Events Group!

Over the past 2 years, I have thrown myself into this company and realized that although it was an established company, I would still have to create memorable weddings for my clients with my brand behind the name to continue the success, but in this case, create my own success.

Here’s to many more years of success for Platinum!
